A few weeks ago, Judge Barry Williams denied the prosecution’s request to compel Baltimore police officer William Porter to testify in the three trials still on the court’s calendar (and not tied up in the appellate court). Officer Edward Nero’s trial, scheduled for February 22, 2016, is next. In denying the motion to compel, the judge noted that until now the prosecution had said Porter was a material witness only for the trials of Caesar Goodson and Alicia White; there had been no mention of needing his testimony in the trials of the other three officers. Last Thursday, the state filed a notice that it intends to appeal the judge’s denial. The next day the state asked the court to stay Nero’s trial. That decision is pending but it’s quite possible that the start of Nero’s trial could change quickly…
